Hoke High hires Faulk as head baseball coach

Hoke County welcomed Coach Shane Faulk into the Buck family as the new varsity baseball coach. Coach Faulk will also be part of the football staff in the fall and will work in the Exceptional Children’s department at Hoke County High School. Meet Coach Faulk Q&A interview.

Boucher: Tell us about your baseball background?

Faulk: I started my college career at Coastal Carolina University after graduating from Myrtle Beach HS. I then transferred to USC-Lancaster and finished my playing career at North Carolina A&T State University. After playing I began coaching at T.W. Andrews High School, as well as in the Appalachian League. Both my brother and dad have also been involved in my baseball background.

Boucher: What is your vision for our baseball team?

Faulk: My vision for this baseball team is to build a prideful and winning culture. I want our players to take pride in being a Hoke County Buck, whether that is in the classroom, the community, or on the field.

Boucher: How would you describe your coaching philosophy?

Faulk: My coaching philosophy is to get 1% better every day. I want to create the desire to win and to get better as both an individual and as a player.

Boucher: How would your players describe you?

Faulk: Players would describe me as energetic, hard-working, and a leader.

Boucher: What do you do besides coaching baseball?

Faulk: I enjoy being on the water, traveling, watching movies, coaching football & cooking. Boucher: What are your plans regarding our youth/feeder program?

Faulk: I would like to go visit and talk to the coaches or individuals who are in charge. I know that I want to have some type of involvement in all of the programs. I would like for these kids to know who I am before they get to high school.

Boucher: As a coach, how do you develop trust with your players?

Faulk: I think that just comes from building individual relationships. I’m here to help them grow both as an individual, as well as a player. I want the players to understand that I am in their corner.

Boucher: What’s a typical training session like for you?

Faulk: Just depends on what exactly we are trying to work on. I usually like to start with the basics and master those before we start moving towards more advanced things.

Boucher: Explain your approach to teaching fundamental baseball skills like throwing, catching, and hitting. Faulk: You have to start with understanding the motions that your body is supposed to be making. Repetition is also something that must be involved in this as well. I usually start with watching the individual and understanding what they are good at, and what needs to be worked on.

Boucher: What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a baseball coach?

Faulk: Seeing the game of baseball grow with an individual that really didn’t care for it very much beforehand. Boucher: How do you handle your bench during games?

Faulk: I usually have a set plan for the players on the bench. Whether that is pinch-hitting, base running, or pitching rotation. Everyone on the bench has a role, and I usually like to let the players know ahead of time what their role for that game might be.

Boucher: What’s your leadership style, would you consider yourself a macro or micro manager?

Faulk: I would say a little bit of both. I like the players to have some sort of freedom to do their responsibilities, but I also want to make sure they are getting done and in the right way.

Boucher: How do you handle a situation where a key player doesn’t attend a game?

Faulk: The player would need to talk to me beforehand. If a player isn’t in attendance for a game without any form of communication beforehand, then that individual will result in some type of suspension.

Boucher: What is your philosophy regarding multi-sport athletes?

Faulk: I believe that playing multiple sports is a positive. Playing multiple sports allows you to become more athletic and more physical. I want athletes who enjoy competing in sports.
